Ra | 9.0 | 8 | 20 | 1999 | Reiner Knizia | alea & Rio Grande Games & Überplay & 999 Games | Simply stunning board and bits and a great game/mechanic to boot. Very balanced scoring. This game rewards patience and versatility. By far my favorite auction game. | |
Chinatown | 7.0 | 3 | 159 | 3 | 1999 | Karsten Hartwig | alea & Heidelberger Spieleverlag & Z-Man Games & Filosofia Editions & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) | Great negotiation/trading game. Recommended for gamers who enjoy Bohnanza like deal-making but want a little more gamer-oomph that comes with the tactical tile placement. Reprint please! |
Taj Mahal | 8.5 | 6 | 45 | 2000 | Reiner Knizia | White Goblin Games & alea & Rio Grande Games & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari Games | A favorite within the gaming group...Lots to take in (cards, colors, network, commodities, score). Not a game to introduce to the in-laws... | |

Auctions, actions points (in essence) and puzzle piece management rolled into a fantastic game. My wife really enjoys this one. Bumped down a notch for being somewhat strategically narrow (builder strategy is rarely feasible). Might consider implementing a variant on next play to spice things up.
Hoity Toity | 5.0 | 2 | 436 | 1990 | Klaus Teuber | FX Schmid & Jumbo & alea & Überplay & Gibsons Games & Avalon Hill & Vini-Spil & G&RRR | Certainly an interesting game if a bit dated. Still lots of fun for a blind bidding game/Paper-Rock-Scissors game. | |
Traders of Genoa, The | 8.0 | 2 | 80 | 2001 | Rüdiger Dorn | alea & Rio Grande Games & Lacerta & Filosofia Editions & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) | Wow! What a negotiation game. | 7 | Puerto Rico | 10.0 | 16 | 2 | 2002 | Andreas Seyfarth | Tilsit & Lautapelit.fi & alea & Rio Grande Games & Ravensburger & Lacerta & Albi & Devir & Stratelibri & MINDOK | The ultimate non-zero sum game. Grabs your attention from the start. Absolutely no dead time. Great bits. The potential endgame kingmaker problem is very minor in my opinion and it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game. | |
Mammoth Hunters | 6.0 | 1 | 1174 | 2003 | Aaron Weissblum & Alan R. Moon | alea & Rio Grande Games | Another beautiful Alea game. Innovative in it's use of the "bad" cards to generate currency for the "good" cards. Unfortunately, the sum of the mechanics turns the game into a metagaming experience. Might be okay for families but probably a bit too much on the nasty side, making it a tough sell. | |

Notre Dame | 10.0 | 29 | 56 | 2007 | Stefan Feld | alea & Rio Grande Games & Filosofia Editions | While there's been a glut of worker placement designs in 2006-2007, I think Notre Dame does it best with the added novelty of the card drafting mechanic and a manageable play time. It's a very clever game design with multiple resources: workers, money, VPs and rats (the anti-resource) and multiple strategic paths. Perfect balance of tactical and strategic choices as one struggles between specializing for greater net gain and diversifying out of necessity. The card drafting and the rotation through the personality cards adds a nice level of randomness which should keep things fresh. Definitely a must-own game. | |
In the Year of the Dragon | 8.0 | 10 | 66 | 2007 | Stefan Feld | alea & Rio Grande Games & Filosofia Editions | In the Year of the Dragon is designed in the same "disaster management" mold as ND except it pushes the envelop even more. Over a 11 turn game, there are in essence 4 peaceful turns. All other turns have a significant disaster that players have to deal with whether it's wealth generation for taxes, or food generation for droughts, or militia development to fend off the Mongols, etc... Probably the most significant difference between ND and In the Year of the Dragon is that all the events and the event order are known at the beginning of the game for In the Year of the Dragon. As such, there's a greater emphasis on long term strategy for In the Year of the Dragon. That being said, there are still some tactical elements as players struggle to gain the upper hand on the personality track, which determines play and action drafting order. In the Year of the Dragon is definitely heavier than ND even though it plays in roughly the same time frame (roughly 1 hr). I think ND plays better at the lower end of the scale

A little bit like 2-player solitaire, perhaps. But that doesn't stop me from picking this game up all the time, often playing 5+ rounds at a time. A nice quick filler for 2 players.
Jambo | 9.0 | 6 | 138 | 2004 | Rüdiger Dorn | Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & Filosofia Editions & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) | One of the best of the Kosmos 2-er series. Another jewel in Dorn's crown. | |
Blue Moon | 6.0 | 2 | 193 | 2004 | Reiner Knizia | Tilsit & Fantasy Flight Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games | Played three games with each deck. My feeling is that the Vulca deck is the better of the two base sets as it allows easier "big" wins. I enjoyed my games but I got bored with it fairly quick and I don't think I want to have to buy more decks in order to compensate for my boredom. Certainly not a bad game, just not one I find exciting. | |
Odin's Ravens | 8.0 | 11 | 352 | 2002 | Thorsten Gimmler | Tilsit & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) | Finally played a couple games and I really enjoyed it. Simple and quick game that reminds me of Lost Cities in terms of depth. The Magic Way and the recycling of cards through the extra deck make for a fun racing game that over time (IMHO) rewards planning. It'll be on my next game order. | |
Balloon Cup | 8.0 | 10 | 348 | 2003 | Stephen Glenn | Tilsit & Paper Iyagi & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games & KoreaBoardGames | One of the best among the 2er Kosmos line. Similar in feel to Lost Cities but with more perceived interaction, as one is able to play on both sides of the balloon hops. Definitely preferred with rules as printed in box (as opposed to designer variant). | |

It has very tense game play due to the very erratic nature of the scores. While this can be seen as a turn-off to some, I personally love the permutation of strong possible "moves" in this game. In this sense, it reminds me a bit of my Magic "combo" days.

Winner's Circle | 4.0 | 1 | 211 | 2001 | Reiner Knizia | alea & Face 2 Face Games | I just don't get excited by this at all as it is too repetitive and simplistic in the decisions. | 1 | Louis XIV | 8.0 | 6 | 112 | 2005 | Rüdiger Dorn | alea & Rio Grande Games | Has a definite Dorn feel to it in that your collecting specific items of type A to transform to items of type B for victory points. Good balance between tough strategic and tough tactical choices. I've enjoyed all my 2, 3 and 4er games equally. My initial concerns about replayability have diminished. (rating up from 7.5) | |
Palazzo | 5.0 | 3 | 497 | 2005 | Reiner Knizia | alea & Rio Grande Games | Played 3 times...lowering from 6 to a 5. In all my games, Palazzo seemed too short to exert enough control on your building scores and as a result, I'd say luck tends to mostly determine the result. Theme is a bit weak - placing building floors between other building floors seems a bit ridiculous to me but then again I don't have problems with the palace shuffle in Alhambra. Nothing really new - not a stellar Knizia in my mind. Quintessential average (5). | |
Augsburg 1520 | 6.0 | 1 | 613 | 2006 | Karsten Hartwig | alea & Rio Grande Games | Tentative rating after 1 playing. An auction game with important timing considerations for scoring. One either wins a round by bidding the most cards, or in the case of a tie, by having the highest card within the bid. After my one play, I wonder if the game would be a bit better with the tiebreaker being the total amount bid...

Commands & Colors: Ancients | 7.0 | 2 | 14 | 2006 | Richard Borg | GMT Games | Diversity of troops in this game creates an extremely rewarding system that will likely outshine Memoir 44 and Battle Cry. The flaw in the game is the poor components design (board, blocks, dice). It is extremely difficult to tell different units apart at a quick glance (particularly for the small block, light infantry troops). While the artwork adds some character to the game, it's certainly not user-friendly. I'd rather make my own board and buy some small miniatures than play with the components that come in the GMT box. While I would rate the game highly, there's no way this game is worth the retail price. Can't imagine spending even more money on the expansions... | |
