1Ra8.02521  1999Reiner Kniziaalea & Überplay & 999 Games & Rio Grande GamesAfter a lull, I'm happy to play this again. It does have some issues ... wild swings of luck in the final tile draws for each epoch.
2Chinatown7.02163  1999Karsten HartwigFilosofia Editions & alea & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Z-Man Games & Heidelberger SpieleverlagArguably the best negotiation game. Unlike Traders of Genoa, it's limits build a nice framework for new players (who find Genoa bewildering).

40Simply Catan9.051083  2006Klaus TeuberSimplyFunThis can be used as a standard Catan game. Giving up some small variety of board positions for a much nicer aesthetic. In that case, it rates a 9. It can also be used to do a simpler version of Settlers. (You could, of course, also do the same thing with another set ... you are just stripping out the rules). I have no idea how that works ... Settlers is easy enough for my daughter to start playing when she was six.

1Battle Cry8.010122  2000Richard BorgAvalon Hill (Hasbro)Simple game, high replayability. (Played 25 times, but most games before I started tracking). Reasonable amount of luck; given its length. I'd graft on a few card changes from Memoir/BattleLore. 1) All probes now draw a card. 2) Change All out Assualt to "Activate a # of units equal to your command rating." 3) Give all special cards the "Or activate a single unit, if you have no X." Otherwise it's fine.
2Memoir '446.0238  2004Richard BorgDays of Wonder & Edge EntertainmentRules improve on Battle Cry, but the published scenarios seem much less interesting. Civil War fits mechanics better than WWII, I think.

7Commands & Colors: Ancients6.0214  2006Richard BorgGMT GamesI like C&C, in theory. But after a few games I sold my copy. I don't have any particular gripes (unlike Memoir, which didn't have good scenarios in the box), but I'm not strongly attached to Ancients and while the game was in no way complex, using the chart felt awkward. In contrast, I didn't need to refer to anything in Battle Cry. Simple games should be simple.

10BattleLore7.0424  2006Richard BorgDays of Wonder & Fantasy Flight GamesNeeds more scenarios, as many of the published ones aren't terribly balanced (like Memoir '44)
