1Ra8.02321  1999Reiner Kniziaalea & Überplay & 999 Games & Rio Grande GamesAn amazingly fun game fraught with decision tension and a wonderful combination of multiple paths to victory and unequal values.
2Chinatown10.05163  1999Karsten HartwigFilosofia Editions & alea & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Z-Man Games & Heidelberger SpieleverlagFeels a little like what Acquire might be if you added a trading element to it. I really enjoy the game, and find it immensely replayable. This is a great trading game and deserves a spot in almost anyone's collection.
3Taj Mahal8.01141  2000Reiner Kniziaalea & White Goblin Games & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari Games & Rio Grande GamesWhat a great game, the mechanics serve to balance desires and there is no optimal strategy. One of Knizia's best.

5Hoity Toity8.017433  1990Klaus TeuberVini-Spil & alea & Gibsons Games & Jumbo & FX Schmid & Avalon Hill & Überplay & G&RRRGreat mechanics, funny theme, well balanced, a really great game. We played with 5 players, and I can see that, as others here say, it is best with that number.

Update: I now own both the FXSchmid version and the Uberplay version (Hoity Toity).2nd update: Beacuse I am that big a loser, and I couldn't stand a hole in my "Wall of Alea Games" nor could I stomach filling it with the F/X Schmid version, I am now the proud idiot who owns this game in three different versions.

Somebody smack me, please?

10Rum & Pirates6.07719  2006Stefan Feldalea & Rio Grande GamesLighter game than Alea is known for. Good game, nice bits, fun to play. Family game, not a deep thinker.
11Notre Dame8.0648  2007Stefan FeldFilosofia Editions & alea & Rio Grande GamesTerrific game of conflicting choices. the game has a bit of trouble with ability to control what cards you get, but is otherwise terrific, and well worth the time and effort to play.
12In the Year of the Dragon4.0562  2007Stefan FeldFilosofia Editions & alea & Rio Grande GamesThe planning and tense decisions necessary in most good games are here in abundance. Each turn you have to maximize your own actions and plan for victory in a careful balancing act. I really enjoy a game with this type of planning, and both the components and gameplay here are what you would expect from an Alea game. HOWEVER, the game totally starts to fall flat after a few plays as you realize that this game is nothing more than an exercise in avoiding pain, there is only one way to victory, and only one person can manage it each round. Very annoying game, overall.

Still playing my parents 1968 version. UPDATE: bought a copy at WotC as they were going out of business. The bits are really nice in the new version. Just lovely. Makes a great game even nicer.

I love to play, and have acquired a beautiful set that I am very proud of (jujube bowls, yunzi stones, and a spruce goban) and keep on display when I am not playing. I can hold my own in a 6.5 point komi match as either white or black against the computer software Aya, which is estimated to play at 10 kyu.

1Louis XIV7.04103  2005Rüdiger Dornalea & Rio Grande GamesPlayed 4 times at the GOF 2005. Game is terrific with multiple options and that lovely "just one more action needed" feeling. Each round you have to decide whether to go for the best items, where there will be much competition, or to concentrate on, and likely win, more smaller items. Your mission cards and powers help decide that. Still learning, but this is a great game.
2Palazzo7.04475  2005Reiner Kniziaalea & Rio Grande GamesA very good game. Fast, tense, some luck to balance things, really quite enjoyable.
3Augsburg 15206.01579  2006Karsten Hartwigalea & Rio Grande GamesVery good game, though it runs a bit long with 5. I really enjoyed the decision making process here, and the poker-esque strategies (which remind one a bit of Taj Mahal in flavor, if not in mechanics).

1Battle Cry7.09122  2000Richard BorgAvalon Hill (Hasbro)Very good game. I prefer to play each scenario twice at a sitting, and the winner is who did best overall, because, as in real wars, not every scenario is perfectly balanced. Lovely bits as well, and a beautiful board.
2Memoir '447.03638  2004Richard BorgDays of Wonder & Edge EntertainmentPlayed several times now. Very enjoyable, light, fast, fun.
3Memoir '44 - Terrain Pack8.05-1  2005Richard BorgDays of WonderA valuable aid. Must have for fans of the M44 game.
4Memoir '44 - Eastern Front8.05-1  2005Richard BorgDays of WonderExcellent addition to the M44 series. I love the method of simulating the political problems of the rooskies.
5Memoir '44 - Winter/Desert Board Map8.05-1  2005Richard BorgDays of WonderAnother must have for M44 fans
6Memoir '44 - Pacific Theater7.05-1  2006Richard BorgDays of WonderBuy the Eastern Pack first, then this one.
7Commands & Colors: Ancients8.0914  2006Richard BorgGMT GamesThe best implementation of the series yet. Edit: Second best, as BattleLore beats it slightly. I prefer the blocks to the minis, and it is still a great game, but the lore system is great.
8Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #1: Greece & Eastern Kingdoms8.04-1  2006Richard BorgGMT GamesI prefer these battles to the originals, though more terrain tiles and options would have been nice
9Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #2: Rome and the Barbarians  -1  2007Richard BorgGMT GamesUnplayed as of yet...
10BattleLore9.01224  2006Richard BorgDays of Wonder & Fantasy Flight GamesWithout a doubt, the best of the C&C Series. The Lore cards add to the strategy of the game, and help to balance the luck, and make the game feel very themetic. Fabulous!
