| 1 | Ra | 9.0 | 53 | 21 | 1999 | Reiner Knizia | alea & Ãberplay & 999 Games & Rio Grande Games | This is undoubtedly my favorite auction game. I loved playing this online at BSW, and love playing it in person with my Uberplay reprint even more. This is one of those games that definitely gets better with repeated plays because you gain a better understanding of the scoring system, and how much different sets of tiles are worth at different points in the game. The open sun bidding chips are unlike any other auction system I've played before, and really make this game special. Purchased: Date unknown | ||

Outstanding mix of theme with brain-burning gameplay. I like how the game minimizes luck by allowing players to draw the top five cards from each stack and pick one. Finally, very high replayability due to the many possible paths to victory. Received as gift: July 20, 2005

| 6 | Traders of Genoa, The | 9.0 | 4 | 78 | 2001 | Rüdiger Dorn | Filosofia Editions & alea & Lacerta & Rio Grande Games | This is probably the best trading/negotiating game available. It's certainly more complicated than either Settlers or Bohnanza, but the added layers of depth make this game less dependent on luck and based more on the skill of the players in getting the best deals. The presentation of the game pieces/board is especially attractive. However, the game does lag a bit towards the end and would be a little better if slightly shorter. Purchased: October 13, 2005 | ||

Not much. I was blown away by this game the first few times I played it. The role selection mechanism is ingenious. I think everyone should play this game at least a few times in their lives. While it may not be for everyone, it's certainly worth trying to see if it's for you. Received as gift: July 20, 2005

I can't believe it actually managed to live up to my expectations after looking forward to it for 10 months (from October 2006 to July 2007). The mechanic of passing your hand to the player on your left at the end of every turn was very clever, although it was a little tricky to remember that play proceeded clockwise while passing cards was counter-clockwise. I enjoyed both times I played, and would be happy to play again, although I don't have a strong urge to purchase the game, but that may just be because I only need to so many light card games in my collection.

I was expecting a light/fluffy/luck-based card game on the same level as Balloon Cup or Lost Cities, and while it's pretty light and luck-based, it's actually a rather fun and interesting card game. The mechanics provide you a good deal of flexibility for turning a bad hand into a decent one given the variety of options you have, plus the artwork is pretty nice too. Not too shabby for a $13, 30 minute card game. If you know what you're getting into, it's a worthy addition to the Kosmos two-player line. Received as gift: July 20, 2007

While the rules are pretty simple, the strategy takes numerous plays to grasp as you learn how the characters interact. Although this game looks somewhat similar to the classic game Stratego, it's significantly better because each character has a special ability, and playing a card for each battle is also an improvement. You need your company to go defunct quickly to get a majority or minority bonus right away. 2) More often than not, all 6 of the tiles you're holding don't do anything at all, and you can't help but place one of them completely randomly because none of them add to an existing corporation, join corporations, or present the possibility of forming a corporation; they're just off in the middle of nowhere. This is particularly true in the first half of any game. I have never understood what people see in this game. It's alright, but I feel like I must be missing something, perhaps nostalgia? | 1 | Louis XIV | 9.0 | 15 | 103 | 2005 | Rüdiger Dorn | alea & Rio Grande Games | Outstanding area control game that works great as a two-player game but also plays well with up to four players. Louis XIV packs an enormous amount of game into a moderate amount of time, presenting some very interesting choices and making the game different every time. This has been rising up my rating and games played list very fast. Purchased: April 9, 2006

| 2 | Memoir '44 | 5.0 | 2 | 38 | 2004 | Richard Borg | Days of Wonder & Edge Entertainment | Don't let my 6 rating fool you. I didn't think this was a bad game. In fact, I think the system's description of a 6 fits perfectly. This is an okay game. It involves some fun and challenge, and I will certainly be willing to play sporadically if in the right mood. Just like other Days of Wonder games, the components are top notch and really contribute to the experience. The inclusion of numerous scenarios is also very nice. I fear it might get a bit old and repetitive too quickly, but it's certainly a nice introductory war-themed game. | ||

| 7 | Commands & Colors: Ancients | 5.0 | 2 | 14 | 2006 | Richard Borg | GMT Games | I'm conflicted about this game. Things counting against it are three-fold. First, the components leave a lot to be desired (especially the board) which is a quick turn-off. Second, the setup time is ridiculously long considering the length of the game. Third, dice just bother me, especially when they have a large impact on the results. However, it's a well-designed game that is pretty fun to play. I don't think I need to own a copy, but I wouldn't mind playing someone else's. I would get one of the four different games with the C&C system, but I can't pick which one, so I'm stuck with none for now since indecision wins the day. | ||

| 10 | BattleLore | 5.0 | 1 | 24 | 2006 | Richard Borg | Days of Wonder & Fantasy Flight Games | The third game in the C&C series that I tried (having previously played Memoir '44 and Commands & Colors: Ancients), and the third disappointment. It's not a bad game, but I fail to see what's so great about this series of games. I have a few complaints with this series: 1) the setup time is ridiculous, it takes forever to get all the terrain and units in place; 2) the amount of luck is unbelievable and the dice just never go my way... ever; 3) the games are not especially complex but the rules are very fiddly, they're not at all streamlined because there are tons of little things to remember like all the modifiers for the dice; 4) I don't usually care much about theme, but I don't see why you'd bother making games about WWII, ancient warfare, and elves/dwarves if they're not going to change much, so it never actually feels different regardless of what theme is pasted on. This is not to say that these are the worst games ever, but they're just not especially great. They're alright and I'd be willing to pl |
