1Dungeon Twister4.01191  2004Christophe BoelingerEdge Entertainment & Asmodée Editions & Nexus & Pro LudoAfter one play I am intrigued. We didn't really know what we were doing and made some seriously bad choices. I need to give this game enough time to learn the characters and combinations... then'll I'll really know how to rate it. 1Ra8.0420  1999Reiner Kniziaalea & Rio Grande Games & Überplay & 999 GamesGreat game! It's a neat auction game that is quite thematic. Without a doubt, this is the most fun straight up auction game I've had the pleasure of playing. One of Knizia's best.

3Taj Mahal7.0145  2000Reiner KniziaWhite Goblin Games & alea & Rio Grande Games & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari GamesThis one is a good game. I don't know if it is a fun game though; I need a few more plays before I can answer that question with confidence.
4Princes of Florence, The8.0111  2000Richard Ulrich & Wolfgang KramerWhite Goblin Games & alea & Nexus & Rio Grande Games & Lacerta & Excalibur & Pro Ludo & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari GamesI finally managed to play this one! And what a game it is... seven turns to get it all done, how agonizing! The armchair economist in me really loves figuring the opportunity costs, calculating how much money I will need, and then crying out in dismay as things do not go as planned! I really hope to keep playing this one, and could see my rating going up in the future.
5Hoity Toity7.04436  1990Klaus TeuberFX Schmid & Jumbo & alea & Überplay & Gibsons Games & Avalon Hill & Vini-Spil & G&RRRThis game is a breeze to teach, and pretty easy to play. The interactions are great, lots of trash can be talked, and there is enough strategy to appease most people. What an awesome game, I can't believe it took me so long to try it!
6Traders of Genoa, The7.0280  2001Rüdiger Dornalea & Rio Grande Games & Lacerta & Filosofia Editions & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG)
7Puerto Rico8.0112  2002Andreas SeyfarthTilsit & Lautapelit.fi & alea & Rio Grande Games & Ravensburger & Lacerta & Albi & Devir & Stratelibri & MINDOKI officially do really like Puerto Rico. I've only played a few games but all have contained great choices, frustrating surprises and lots of fun up to the finish. I'll be happy to play many more games of this one.I also own the expansion but really haven't seen the need to use it yet.
8Mammoth Hunters  1174  2003Aaron Weissblum & Alan R. Moonalea & Rio Grande Games
9Fifth Avenue7.011116  2004Wilko Manzalea & Rio Grande GamesAn interesting and unique game. Not something I'd want to break out every week, but it would be nice to get a few more plays in to learn the nuances.
10Rum & Pirates7.02737  2006Stefan Feldalea & Rio Grande GamesAny game where you chase ladies, drink rum and fight over bunk space is fine by me! Seriously, this is a fun and very decent game. Stefan Feld has some talent.
11Notre Dame8.0856  2007Stefan Feldalea & Rio Grande Games & Filosofia EditionsI first played this at BGG.con '06 thanks to Val Putman, and have tried it a few more times after it was finally released. This one is a keeper... Alea does it again! I love how it scales so well, how there are so many strategies... every time I play this I see someone win using a new method. I think it has a bit of a learning curve, but nothing out of line with other Alea games. One of the best of 2007!
12In the Year of the Dragon7.0466  2007Stefan Feldalea & Rio Grande Games & Filosofia EditionsPretty brutal with 5 players. I did enjoy the relative flexibility found in the 3 player game, and will attempt to play with that number only.

I loved it. Later on in college, a friend showed me the copy he picked up during a visit to Germany. The rest is history! I absolutely love this game. My personal favorite of the millenium. I have introduced countless people to Euros through this game, and only a handfull have not enjoyed themselves. When I think about Eurogames, I think about Settlers of Catan.UPDATE: I finally have grown a little weary of Settlers. It is an amazing game, for sure, but I realize that there are many more games out there to be discovered. I'll still play it gladly if requested, but will probably push for Cities and Knights over the basic game. I do, however, give in to the fact that Settlers is the biggest deal as far as my board gaming history goes, and for that reason it now gets a 10, even though I'm a lot less likely to play it.
2Catan: Seafarers6.03-1  1997Klaus TeuberMayfair Games & dan-spil & Ísöld ehf. & Galakta & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games & Filosofia Editions & DevirPicked it up in the Spring of 2004 because Settlers was going so well with my friends. It's a fun change of pace every now and then. If we only have three players for settlers, I always recommend a Seafarers scenario. I find it more enjoyable with three. Das Buch also complements this set quite well. UPDATE: traded for Goldbrau.
3Catan: Cities & Knights6.01-1  1998Klaus TeuberMayfair Games & Tilsit & Brain Games & dan-spil & Ísöld ehf. & Galakta & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games & Filosofia Editions & DevirSettlers but more complicated? Sounded good. This is a fun variant that I don't play often. I need to work on changing that! UPDATE: might as well trade it now that I have the 3d set. UPDATE: sold to my friend Stan.

7Siedler von Catan, Die - Historische Szenarien6.02-1  1998Klaus Teuberdan-spil & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 GamesI've never played Alexander, but Cheops is great fun! I've enjoyed the last few games I've played as much as a standard Settlers game. That being said, now that I'm not around a crowd that always plays Settlers, this one is not hitting the table. UPDATE: traded for Kahuna.

9Siedler von Catan, Die - Das Buch zum Spielen6.0 -1  2000Klaus TeuberKosmos (Franckh-Kosmos)Cool options for changing up Settlers every now and then. The Great Race is wonderful for two players, the Desert Raiders is fun, and many others seem enjoyable. But truth be told, it's not all that often that I use the book. If you love playing Catan all the time then go ahead and pick up a copy. If you only indulge occasionally it most probably will not be worth it. UPDATE: sold!

20Settlers of Catan - Event Cards6.01-1  2005Klaus TeuberMayfair Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & Catan GmbHThis expansion is interesting. Worthwhile if you are looking to change things up a bit, or don't like the dice element to Settlers. Be warned though, some people think the events are even more random than the dice. I don't agree, but it is worth considering. And also worth a try by anyone who enjoys the game.

36Starship Catan3.03228  2001Klaus TeuberMayfair Games & Tilsit & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 GamesStarship Catan is definitely a Catan game. The resource generating, exploring aspects are all here, the developing in a specific style is here, the element of luck is here... but where is the fun? The first two times I played this wrong, but even on the third playing with correct rules, we felt the game lacked something. I guess when it comes down to it is that there's not enough enjoyment for the time required (about 1.5 hours). The system is good, there's no doubt about that. I just wish I cared more about the outcome of the game. UPDATE: traded for Knizia's Lord of the Rings co-op game.

I hope to have more plays of this one... it's giving Battle Line some good competition. I love how you can take the top cards on the discard piles... it opens up some really interesting opportunities. After playing this quite a bit more, I have to rate it above Battle Line. The replayability and universal appeal of this game make it win for me. I'll still keep Battle Line but it probably won't see as much play... at least not until I wear this one out.
2Jambo3.01138  2004Rüdiger DornRio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & Filosofia Editions & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG)The game was fine but I don't know yet. I don't like all the uncertainty from the luck of the draw... all the animals and people cards coming out really make it difficult to plan well. And where's the economic aspect I heard so much about? Storing some junk for a while and then selling it is not incredibly interesting. I've only played one game, which I've won. I'll try another game or two, but right now I'm not sure how it'll stand up over time. I've heard that removing the animal and people cards that you don't like helps the game, but I'm not sure it's worth going to the trouble. Time will tell.
3Blue Moon7.012193  2004Reiner KniziaTilsit & Fantasy Flight Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 GamesI enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. It offers the same cool factor of a CCG without being a crappy CCG. The mechanics are so simple, but provide a nice bit of tension and allow for interesting combos. I'm curious to know how the different decks play. I recommend this for two people looking to get deep into a game with many repeated plays.

5Balloon Cup6.04348  2003Stephen GlennTilsit & Paper Iyagi & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games & KoreaBoardGamesPlayed using the Rio Grande rules. I thought it was good but that it felt a bit chaotic as I had little control since my opponent could sabotage what I was doing. I'd like to trying using the designer's rule of not playing on your opponent's side until you have completed yours. I think this would give me the control I'm looking for, and would cause my rating to go up a point. UPDATE: I have played the way Stephen Glenn intended, and I firmly believe that it makes for a better game.
6Kahuna6.012373  1998Günter CornettTilsit & Paper Iyagi & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) & 999 Games & Filosofia Editions & KoreaBoardGamesKahuna is great for a quick game between two players. I found that the decisions were agonizing at times, the screwage factor was fun without being infuriating, and I get great satisfaction for a win, but am ok if I lose. Not bad for a quick little game! UPDATE: I do think the victory point assignments are kind of stupid... we just tend to play each round as it's own game, saying whoever gets best of 5 is the overall winner of the evening. This feels much better for us. UPDATE: traded with Alhambra for Ticket to Ride and Ice Cream.

12Hellas5.02853  2002Franz-Benno DelongeTilsit & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos)After two plays I'm not sure. I like it, but the game can go rather one-sided if there is a lot of card action early on. Our first game was very interesting and a bit of a brain burner. There was lots of back and forth before I finally was whittled down. The second game started with me having a majority of the temples, using some tricky card play, and basically dominating. My opponent never had a chance. We need to play more to see what normally happens during a game. If it's not so one-sided, I may rate it better.
13Dracula6.03942  2003Michael RieneckTilsit & Rio Grande Games & Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos)A fun game that is way more than just memory... at first I had trouble, trying to memorize where everything important was. After playing for a while, I realized the importance of bluffing and changing tactics depending upon the cards in your hand. Moving the barriers is a fantastic mechanism which should not be taken lightly; they can make the difference between a win and a loss. This is one of the better Kosmos 2-player games I've experienced, and is definitely underrated.

5San Juan5.0157  2004Andreas SeyfarthMöbius Games & alea & Rio Grande Games & Filosofia EditionsI can see why people like this game, but it just bores me. I find none of the tension present in Puerto Rico here in San Juan. I just didn't care about the outcome of the game, although I was trying. I'd rather play St. Petersburg over this. And I don't like that game much either. I guess I'd just rather play PR or nothing.

1Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper7.05246  1998Mike FitzgeraldPegasus Spiele & U.S. Games Systems, Inc.A very enjoyable two player rummy variant. I am sure that the game will reveal itself more as I continue to play it.
2Mystery Rummy: Murders in the Rue Morgue5.01633  1999Mike FitzgeraldU.S. Games Systems, Inc.This game was interesting but for some reason it did my head in. I found it hard to communicate with my partner through the passing of cards. I'd like to say it was because I was tired... in reality it's because I stink at rummy. However, I'd like to give the Jack the Ripper version of Mystery Rummy a go. I think that sounds a bit more appealing, and is one that I would consider purchasing if I enjoyed it (and got used to the game a bit more).

All in all, it's a pretty good game. I feel like the speed it would take in real life would be annoying after having learned the game on a screen.

It is so simple and clever, and really pisses me off when I can't see what I need to do to score. 1Louis XIV7.02112  2005Rüdiger Dornalea & Rio Grande GamesLouis is a good, but not great game. I have fun when playing, and make good improvements each time I play. The randomness due to the many cards is a little annoying. However I think I can ignore that easily enough and just have fun playing the game. There are enough decisions in the game to provoke good thought, and the strategic depth does shine through the randomness of the cards. UPDATE: sold!
2Palazzo5.02497  2005Reiner Kniziaalea & Rio Grande GamesA fun and fast game. This game does for me what I hoped Clocktowers would. I appreciate it for it's quick game length and tight decisions... you can't take your time with this one and expect everything to work out. I like balancing the tower building options, and figuring out how much to spend on the auctions. I like Capitol much more than this, but will play Palazzo again. I'm curious to know how it will stand up to repeat playings. UPDATE: The more games I learn, the less desire I have to play this game again. Bummer. UPDATE: traded for Money!

1Battle Cry7.0 128  2000Richard BorgAvalon Hill (Hasbro)I was introduced to this by my GW friend SA. After getting it for a Christmas gift one year, I spent countless hours playing Battle Cry with my friend Dave back in college. We played through the entire set of scenarios as a campaign and had a great time. Dave was a blast to play with, he combined shit-talking with sportsmanship in a very nice way. After recently getting Memoir '44, I had to downgrade Battle Cry. It probably won't get played since the Memoir rules are more balanced. However, it'll stay in my top 10 as one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had.
2Memoir '447.0341  2004Richard BorgEdge Entertainment & Days of WonderThis takes everything I love about Battle Cry and makes it even better. This one will be played quite a bit by me. UPDATE: Hmmm... I have hardly played this one. What gives?
