| 1 | Dungeon Twister | 4.0 | 1 | 191 | 2004 | Christophe Boelinger | Edge Entertainment & Asmodée Editions & Nexus & Pro Ludo | Overall, a game with some neat ideas but it really needed some more playtesting and development to make the game more fun and less of an exercise in frustration. The rules seem to be a little more fiddly than they need to be with lots of exceptions and the game dragged on much longer than it needed to. The board and the action number cards are much more restraining than they should be and this was the main cause of frustration for me. For a game that bills itself as a no luck strategy game I certainly was surprised at the lack of control I seemed to have. I really wanted to like the game and was really looking forward to playing it. A no luck game like this with a fantasy theme really sounded like a good idea but after playing it just really didn't do anything for me at all. | ||

Almost the same game play as the Ripper version of MR but the fact that you don't get penalized for holding cards in your hand at the end of a hand changes your strategy just a bit. I also like that the rewards can accumulate from hand to hand. The Sheriff cards also have a little more variety than the Gavel cards in MR: JtR. | 1 | Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper | 8.0 | 7 | 246 | 1998 | Mike Fitzgerald | Pegasus Spiele & U.S. Games Systems, Inc. | Nice rummy varient. Light but still lots of choices. I like the fact that there are 2 ways to end a hand, going out or playing the Ripper Escapes card. That keeps the tension level up a bit. I'm on the fence as to which I like better JtR or Wyatt Earp. Both are very similar but have interesting differences. The Ripper Escapes card adds a very nice element to JtR as does the voting mechanic. But the accumulating money on the outlaws in Wyatt Earp is neat as well. At least in this one you get a deck of standard size cards of fairly good quality unlike the smaller cards in Wyatt Earp. I also think that JtR may play better with only two players.

It used to be sure an innovative game but lately has become a bit dated. The income distribution early on can be brutal. A player or two can be essentially out of the game through no fault of their own. But it is a good solid economic game. I think there are variants out there that will help with the early game income problems that occasionally crop up. Overall though this is one of those game that everyone should play. In terms of just number of versions and the history of the game in publication this one rivals any game.

But to me, chess almost always ends up with one or the other player beating their head against a wall. Because it's been around for so long and so much has been written about the game, it just comes down to who has done their homework in many cases. The player with the most experience will almost always win. It's a good game but it's very situational. The game requires quite a bit of effort to get good at and once you can say you are 'good', no one wants to play with you! You have to have players who are closely matched in skill level to make it interesting. Without some sort of matching the game becomes pointless for both players.

| 7 | Commands & Colors: Ancients | 8.5 | 4 | 14 | 2006 | Richard Borg | GMT Games | The 3rd game in the Command & Colors series behind Battle Cry and Memoir '44. Probably a better game than either of these two. It still has dice and cards so the luck is a bit on the heavy side but the cards are more diverse in this game and the rules give the players more meaningful choices. I'm still up in the air on whether I like this one better than Battlelore. I'll have to play Battlelore some more and see how it is but right now I think I prefer Ancients better. I'm not sure how to feel about the lore cards/war council in Battlelore. They offer some interesting options but they also introduce more randomness into an already heavily random game. Ancients might be the best of the bunch. For those thinking that plastic minis would be better for a game like this, the blocks are easier to handle and easier to tell apart in my opinion. Imagine 13 different types of units including 5 different infantry units and 3 different calvalry units each of which look similar. | ||

| 10 | BattleLore | 8.0 | 2 | 27 | 2006 | Richard Borg | Fantasy Flight Games & Days of Wonder | In the Command and Colors series this is a worthy addition but not the best of the 4 games currently released. Battle Cry had some problems and the system doesn't seem to work as well with modern warfare (Memoir '44). Ancients certainly is more streamlined while still employing some of the interesting formation elements and tactics. The creatures in Battlelore are cool and the war council/lore cards are a nice addition. But I think the 'cleaner' Ancients is maybe a better system. Also, it seems the lore cards in Battlelore inject more chaos into a game that already has a lot of luck. Still, Battlelore is an enjoyable game. | ||

This is very nice since it updates everything with the latest rules and works the new air rules into the scenarios. The 3rd part of the expansion is the updated terrain/unit cards. Quite useful.
