Ra | 10.0 | 14 | 21 | 1999 | Reiner Knizia | alea & Ãberplay & 999 Games & Rio Grande Games | It was clear after the first session that Ra was an excellent game, and each successive play reinforces that. Easy to teach, fun to play. Half-way through our first game, C-- said "This is a really good game!" Afterwards she asked if we could play again soon. I was so happy I thought I might cry. | |

Taj Mahal | 8.0 | 4 | 41 | 2000 | Reiner Knizia | alea & White Goblin Games & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari Games & Rio Grande Games | A very interesting game: bluffing, hand management, area control all rolled into one. I'm not sure I really get it, but I'm looking forward to trying. I think I'm stuck in the same place with this as I was with Power Grid for a while: I'd really like to play with people with the same level of enthusiasm and experience to see how good the game can be. I'm thinking "really good", but right now, I'd just rather play Beowulf. | |
Princes of Florence, The | 6.0 | 3 | 9 | 2000 | Richard Ulrich & Wolfgang Kramer | alea & White Goblin Games & Excalibur & Pro Ludo & Lacerta & Quined White Goblin Games (QWG) & Ystari Games & Rio Grande Games & Nexus | I am just unsure; I like the mechanics of this game, but I think real competent play requires a familiarity with the components -- the different jobs, buildings, bonus and prestige cards, and so on -- that I just didn't have this first time out. I still had a good time and would really like to play a game all the way to completion. UPDATE: After two games, I have learned two things: One, never let someone get two jesters, much less four. Two, this is a pretty good game. | |
Hoity Toity | 7.0 | 4 | 433 | 1990 | Klaus Teuber | Vini-Spil & alea & Gibsons Games & Jumbo & FX Schmid & Avalon Hill & Ãberplay & G&RRR | I am almost supernaturally bad at bluffing games. I keep buying them, though, because they are fun. I've played this now once, with three players, and it was a quick, fun romp -- everyone is always interested in what's going on, the game moves along quite quickly, and it's fun and funny. There aren't many 17-year-old games in my collection, but I'm glad I bought this one. | |
Traders of Genoa, The | 7.0 | 1 | 78 | 2001 | Rüdiger Dorn | Filosofia Editions & alea & Lacerta & Rio Grande Games | I am totally unsure how to evaluate this game. I can see the game in the game, if I'm making any sense, but something tells me our game was fairly atypical and a bit bizarre. I think this is an awake game, a caffiene game, so playing it to end a night with soothing music on at the coffeehouse mightn't have been the best way to experience it. Also, losing by $5 tastes a bit bitter... | |
Puerto Rico | 7.0 | 5 | 2 | 2002 | Andreas Seyfarth | Devir & alea & Lautapelit.fi & Tilsit & Albi & Lacerta & MINDOK & Stratelibri & Rio Grande Games & Ravensburger | "I'd rather be playing San Juan." That's what I used to say. Now, after my second game, when small bits of strategy began to glimmer in my mind, I'm really intrigued and ready to try PR again a few more times. | |
Mammoth Hunters | 8.0 | 2 | 1193 | 2003 | Alan R. Moon & Aaron Weissblum | alea & Rio Grande Games | I have to say that I don't really understand the complaints about this game I read here on the Geek. We took about 70 minutes to play our first game, including the rules explanation. The game was pretty quick-moving, and definitely amusing, and there's a good amount of strategy as well. I definitely want to play this some more. | |
Fifth Avenue | 7.0 | 1 | 1067 | 2004 | Wilko Manz | alea & Rio Grande Games | Kinda Taj-Mahal-ish cross between an area control and auction game. Seemed to rocket towards an ending in an unseemly fashion. Definitely need to play this one again! Received from BGG Secret Santa, 2007. Thanks, Santa! | |
Rum & Pirates | 7.0 | 6 | 719 | 2006 | Stefan Feld | alea & Rio Grande Games | This game is a lot of fun, actually! Everyone around the table shouting out the scorpion tallies, inviting people to the pub for drinking contests, just generally laughing and having a good time. I like this game, not least because of that enjoyment factor. It's a very light game with a lot of die rolling, but there's nothing wrong with that as long as everyone's into it! | |
Notre Dame | 5.0 | 4 | 48 | 2007 | Stefan Feld | Filosofia Editions & alea & Rio Grande Games | It's strange how my opinion of this game changes each time I play this. On my initial play at Geekway, I was slightly bored and generally unimpressed. I kept thinking about the game, though, so added it to my post-Geekway game order. Since then, I've had an okay game, a pretty good one, and a very dry and boring one. I think it might be because there's only one form of player interaction in Notre Dame, the card drafting, and that's just the aspect of the game I'm least fond of. Update: I traded this away. It just didn't thrill me enough to kee playing it. | |

Louis XIV | 9.0 | 3 | 103 | 2005 | Rüdiger Dorn | alea & Rio Grande Games | This is a great game. A little complicated, but explained easily enough; strategic play with just a smattering of luck and a few unexpected events. Not too quick, not too long. Gorgeous components and a fun, modular board. I could play this quite a lot -- and actually want to. | |
